Meeting 11Meeting 11 -  By Steve Green
It was a windy night at the Speedway on Saturday night, however for 19 of the countries top Sidecar teams for the NZ Sidecar Grand Prix, all they worried about was the state of the track and how fast they could get around it. Initially the track was smooth and fast after some intensive tyre packing work by Ian Easton of Shannon and Palmerston North driver Bryan Menefy in their Sprintcars. For the Palmerston North Pumas, the Machinery Specialists Stockcar Teams Championships started with an informal get together outside Tasman Fish Supplies in Foxton. The team is very much a local Horowhenua affair consisting of Ron Tye of Shannon, Gavin Taniwha Palmerston North, Josh Prentice Palmerston North, Alec Wilson Foxton, Peter Rees Foxton and Gary Davis of Levin.
Having the cars on display proved to be very popular with passers by and the small picnic area beside the shop was a good gathering place for the team so that pedestrians could get a close look at the cars without blocking the footpath. One of the crew members who proved to be very popular was Alec Wilson’s daughter, one year old Maddyn who’s little black crew T Shirt reads “I’m the cute Puma”.
After lunch at Foxton the drivers loaded up their Stockcars and headed for the Square in Palmerston North where scrutineering was held for the 12 teams entered. Here, all the cars from as far afield as Auckland, Gisborne, Kihikihi, Rotorua and Wellington were checked prior to racing. Continue reading
